Hello! I’m Michelle LaCroix.
I'm an essayist who writes about what the body remembers—using memory, the natural world, and unlikely connections to explore womanhood, desire, and becoming.
My approach
I write essays that ask uncomfortable questions and resist tidy answers. My process involves collecting fragments—memories, scientific research, natural phenomena—and seeing what wants to connect. I'm drawn to braided structures because they mirror how meaning actually gets made: through friction. I never ceases to amaze me what wants to emerge when you put unlike elements next to each other.
I also love writing about craft and what I’m learning. In between essays on Substack I often share techniques that have helped me elevate my own work like exteriority, image, and braided narrative structure.
Where to find my work
I publish on Substack, where you can subscribe to receive new essays and craft reflections.
I previously wrote about people-pleasing and communication under The Hearty Fig—those resources are archived here if you're interested.
